It's so obvious, though. Axel died to protect Sora, but only because Roxas was absorbed into him. He cared so much about Roxas.

And you're still not getting the fact that it seems apparent that Axel DID fall in love with Roxas. I mean, how many guys say to (or about) their males friends...:

"...I would [miss you]."

"Come here. I'll make it all stop." (that was a highly suggestive line)

"You and I both miss someone we care about."

The heart is also a powerful thing (as emphasized in KH series). If Roxas is filling in that empty hole in Axel's chest, then feelings of love will be predominant, and Axel will want something more because he expects more from these new feelings. He can't just brush it off as platonic love, because Axel isn't used to this. He's not very familiar with "love" for it to become a regular part of him - he's a Nobody, after all.
